Making mealtimes meaningful and nourishing

FD 3 16
In early childhood, children form eating habits that influence lifelong attitudes towards food and wellbeing. This places significant responsibilty on educators to provide nourishing eating routines and nutrition to make a lasting contribution to children's long term health and wellbeing.

Dr. Emmi Pikler said, "Food should always be a pleasure.". However, mealtimes in early childhood can easily become more like a stressful takeaway experience in a busy food court, rather than a time for nourishing. This workshop will encourage you to reflect on your approach to mealtimes and to value them as an opportunity to use for learning in the curriculum, to develop children's wellbeing, social and life skills.

We will explore:

  • how to promote meaningful mealtimes through 'nourishing' environments and rolling 'family group' mealtimes
  • ways to plan for and provide healthy food and drinks
  • techniques to ensure you meet each child's dietary needs
  • food safety knowledge and current trends for nourishing children in early childhood and beyond
