recognised prior learning
Recognition of your prior learning
We recognise your current skills and knowledge gained through formal and informal training, and work experiences.

The important details
When you apply for Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) assessment, you begin an assessment-only process and do not receive training or access to learning resources. This is because RPL is designed to assess the student’s existing competency in the performance criteria for each unit.
Please note: RPL assessment needs to be completed following enrolment, and at the commencement of traineeship or apprenticeship.
To be granted Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) for a unit of study, you will need to:
- complete a RPL application form.
- participate in a meeting with First Door to discuss the prior learning evidence and RPL process.
- pay the RPL fee for any relevant unit/s in advance. NOTE: The RPL fee is the same as the student’s usual training and assessment fee per unit.
- provide the required evidence of competency for the listed performance criteria for the unit/s. See step 4 below.
RPL assessment process:
1
Request RPL information on your enrolment form
Provide brief details of your prior learning and relevant experience and skills on your enrolment form.
2
Receive and complete information about RPL process
Read and complete the provided RPL application form. The student understands that no training is received for the units completed by RPL assessment.
3
Determine your eligibility in an initial RPL meeting and pay the relevant RPL fee
An initial RPL meeting is held with your mentor and assessor to overview the RPL process and assessment criteria. This supports you to consider which unit/s you feel are suitable for RPL. The RPL units plan is completed for agreed relevant units and the RPL fee for the relevant unit/s must be paid in advance.
4
Provide evidence of your competence for each unit
Complete the RPL assessment tool for the relevant unit/s. Collect and provide:
- additional evidence of your competence, and
- your workplace supervisor’s completed third party report to verify your relevant knowledge and skills.
5
Evidence provided is assessed
The RPL assessor uses the Assessment tool to check off the required evidence; using the combination of supplied evidence for each performance criteria, performance knowledge and skills.
6
RPL assessment granted or incomplete outcome, workplace-related assessment tasks
The RPL outcome is provided within 2 weeks. If further evidence is required, the RPL assessor will provide instructions so that you can resubmit additional evidence.
7
Additional evidence and/or competency conversation
You have the opportunity to confirm your knowledge and/or skills in the required areas. The competency conversation may be recorded as further evidence.
